The Story of Holy One

Holy One

During one evening of intense Tehillah worship I had a picture of a whirlwind going through the church with fire coming out of its top. I knew immediately it was Holy One. I tried to draw it but I was shaking and could hardly stand under the presence of the Holy Spirit.  Eventually I was able to get what I saw down on paper, but it represented a small degree of what was actually happening. The dilemma then was this: how do you make a whirlwind out of fabric?

With much thought and prayer Chandra Protomanni and I, figured we would create tubes of fabric twisting on themselves and we found this sequined fabric to create the fire at the top. The engineering in this banner is unique as we needed to keep the fabric twisted, yet not so tightly that it became just a rope. The banner ended up with internal horizontal supports strung together with clear fishing line to preserve its width. The fire at the top is supported by a wire frame under the fabric. It is a very fragile banner to move, and as it is extra long, the chandeliers in the sanctuary provide challenges.

The fire is made of gold, silver, blue and pink sequins on sheer black fabric. The two panels, which are twisted, are made of iridescent white lame (a type of shiny fabric) and silver lame overlaid with a sheer purple/green chiffon. The latter was done to achieve a smoky effect. The panels simply trail off at the end as there was no bottom to the whirlwind. The name Holy One was made in 3-D to give substance to the banner and who it represents. Fabrics are very limiting sometimes in their ability to reveal the awesomeness of God.
