This is a Canadian web site.
Its content is intended only for residents of Canada. Dr. Mullen is a graduate of the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine and was formerly a family physician. In 1985 he developed an interest in mood and concentration disorders and now restricts his practice to the medication treatment of these conditions only.
Dr. Mullen has extensive experience with Depression, Manic Depressive or Bipolar Illness, Attention Deficit Disorder, as well as Anxiety disorders including Panic, Phobias and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
To make an appointment with Dr. Mullen, Ontario residents must obtain a referral from their Family Physician. Non residents may call the Clinic directly.
Please complete the registration form (just click on this to take you to the form) then mail or fax it to the Center 1 week prior to your first appointment. You MUST bring your health card or be charged for the appointment. ($200) Please be certain your health card is valid.
Treatment is on an outpatient (office) basis only. Patients needing hospitalization will be transferred to the care of a psychiatrist.
The extensive counselling staff at Bayridge provide individual, family, group or marriage counselling. Statistics show that recovery rates for emotional illnesses improve when counselling and medications are combined. We encourage all patients to find a counsellor while waiting for their initial appointment with Dr. Mullen. Medication is not a substitute for counselling and Dr. Mullen does not do counselling. To make an appointment with a counsellor, please call the Bayridge Family Center office.
Initial Visit
Patients seeing Dr. Mullen for the first time are given a fifty minute consultation to determine if a medically treatable chemical imbalance is present. Please bring a family member who knows you well to all appointments if possible. Subsequent visits for medication adjustments are ten minutes in length. All patients booked for fifty minute appointments must confirm by phone their intention to attend at least one week before the appointment date. If there is no confirmation, then the appointment will be given to the next patient on the waiting list.
There is a severe shortage of mental health physicians in Ontario. In our attempt to help as many as possible and to shorten waiting lists, Dr. Mullen sees a large number of people each day. Please don't be offended if your visit seems short.
Missed or Cancelled Appointments
If an appointment is not kept and there has been no notice given 24 hours in advance, the cost of the missed appointment will be billed directly to the patient ($200 for 50 minute appt. $40 for recheck appts.).
A waiting list for cancelled appointments is always maintained so it is appreciated when patients notify the office as soon as possible when an appointment cannot be kept.
Prescriptions
Please bring all currently prescribed medications and vitamins with you in their original bottles. Please reduce or eliminate caffeine since it worsens mood and concentration disorders.
Prescription renewals are done at the time of your appointment and not by telephone. In exceptional circumstances, prescriptions may be renewed upon receipt of a faxed request from a pharmacist. There is a $5.00 charge for this service. Renewals are not available when Dr. Mullen is not in the office.
