So Much To Do - So Little Time!
Have you noticed how easily we get caught up in the frantic pace of our world? Even if your intention each day is to move about in a calm, methodical manner, doing the tasks that must be done for that day, you soon find that you are rushing to get to the next place you are supposed to be, or frantically answering phones, or stressed over some errands you must run before the day is over. I have made a conscious effort over the last couple of years to slow down the pace of my life, spend more time with God, and listen to His voice throughout the day. This has been one of the most difficult changes I've ever tried to make. I intentionally carve out time early in the morning to spend with Him, and when I am able, I go away to a quiet place for a day or even a few hours. These are refreshing, intimate, learning times with my Father God. But then I must come back and deal with family, work and the everyday normal stuff of life.
Have you ever wondered how men like Brother Lawrence, in the midst of the noise and clatter of the abbey kitchen, could be so calm and peaceful? He wrote that he was able to do this because he kept himself in touch with the quiet within his soul, in touch with his interior being where God dwelt. All he did was done with deep love for his master. I have tried to do this in my daily life and admit that sometimes I do it well and sometimes I fail miserably. But the most valuable lesson I've learned from this journey is that God desperately wants me to come and dwell with Him, is delighted when I can, and does not condemn me when I do not or can not. I am my own worst enemy, not God! I'm the one that starts feeling guilty and mentally beating myself for not "doing better," not God.
So, how do we move into this place of interior rest? We begin by making a decision that we want to go there and that we want to have intimate time with our Father God. Then, we must be willing to put aside those things that keep us from Him. We all know that if we want something bad enough we will find a way to do it. It is actually very simple, but as we've all discovered, extremely difficult to do because everything in our world fights against it. I want to encourage you to try this for one week. Turn the TV off, put the books aside, get alone, be quiet and still and just spend some time resting with God. You will find it refreshing and encouraging.
Beginning this journey could change your life!
